The differece between thermal printer and impact printer

Thermal printers and impact printers are two different types of printing technologies that have distinct features and applications. Here are the key differences between them:

 

1. Printing Technology:
- Thermal Printer: Thermal printers use heat to transfer ink onto the printing surface. They contain a thermal print head that generates heat, causing the special thermal paper to react and produce an image.
- Impact Printer: Impact printers work by physically striking a ribbon onto the printing surface to create an image. The print head typically contains a series of pins or hammers that hit the ribbon against the paper, leaving an impression.

 

2. Print Quality:
- Thermal Printer: Thermal printers generally offer high-quality printouts with smooth lines and graphics. However, the print quality may vary depending on the resolution and capabilities of the specific printer model.
- Impact Printer: Impact printers produce relatively lower quality printouts compared to thermal printers. The impact of the pins or hammers on the ribbon can sometimes result in uneven or less precise printing.

 

3. Noise Level:
- Thermal Printer: Thermal printers are generally quieter during operation since they use heat to create images, eliminating the noise generated by mechanical movements.
- Impact Printer: Impact printers tend to be noisier due to the physical impact of pins or hammers against the paper and ribbon.

 

4. Maintenance and Operating Costs:
- Thermal Printer: Thermal printers usually have lower maintenance costs as they do not require ink or toner replacements. However, the thermal paper used can be more expensive compared to regular paper.
- Impact Printer: Impact printers may require more maintenance, such as replacing ribbons and print heads. However, the cost of ribbons is generally lower than thermal paper.

 

5. Applications:
- Thermal Printer: Thermal printers are commonly used in retail, logistics, and ticketing industries due to their fast printing speed, quiet operation, and ability to print receipts, labels, and barcodes.
- Impact Printer: Impact printers, particularly dot matrix printers, are suitable for applications that require multipart forms, such as invoices, receipts, or carbon copies. They are often used in environments where durability and low-cost printing are important, such as in industrial settings or for printing large volumes.
